Dysphasia - Speech Training
People who had suffered a stroke, neurological illness, head injury or a brain tumour may loss their ability to speak due to the damage of the language area in the brain. The condition, namely Dysphasia, affects patients’ ability in talking, understanding, listening, writing or doing numeral calculations.
FAMILY
Family of Dysphasia patients, might experience disconnection with the patient in certain extend, which gives a discomfort feeling. The fact that family members being not able to eliminate most of the adverse effects Dysphasia had on the patient can leave family members feeling exhausted, sad, helpless, or even guilty.
SUDDEN LIFE CHANGE
People suffering from Dysphasia face a huge change in life. As their intelligent is usually not affected, they can still think clearly, know people’s attitude towards them, and have their own feelings. Sadly, Dysphasic patients are often being mistakenly thought and treated as if they are stupid, drunk, or mentally confused due to their inability and delay in speaking and language processing.
Many patients experienced sharp change from being an authority person, or source of financial or emotional support for the family, to someone who need to be taken care of, who can’t even express him/herself. Most patients will feel frustrated and self-worthlessness over their experience. Learned helplessness and giving up are common.
MUSIC ASSISTED SPEECH TRAINING
Music Assisted Speech Training aims to help people suffering from dysphasia to regain as much purposeful speech through the use of music, in a gradual and progressive manner. The treatment utilizes the patient’s unimpaired ability to sing to facilitate speech production and repeated speech practices in a supportive, encouraging, and interesting means.
SUITABLE CANDIDATE
- Patients posses ability of some sound production or utterance (e.g. ability to produce a humming sound)
- Patients with good understanding of spoken language and good auditory comprehension
- Patients who wish to.
- Improve slurred articulations
- Reduce frequency of phonemic errors
- Increase length of sentence
- Improve clarity of words production, etc
TREATMENT
Usually one to two 15-20 mins session everyday will be good. The treatment can last for a few months to more than a year depending on individual patient progress and frequency of training sessions.
